Project description
The Umm Al Hayman large-scale wastewater treatment plant project, located south of Kuwait City directly on the Persian Gulf, is one of the largest and most complex wastewater projects in the world. With a capacity of up to 500,000 cubic metres per day, Umm Al Hayman treats wastewater from the south of Kuwait, a region in which around 1.7 million people live. The treated water is then used both in agriculture for irrigation and in industry as process water. Essen-based WTE Wassertechnik GmbH, one of Europe's leading providers specialising in municipal wastewater management, is the general contractor responsible for the planning and construction of the wastewater treatment plant and, together with various partners, the realisation of the associated sewer network including pumping stations. The project is scheduled for completion within a time frame of 2.5 years for the wastewater treatment plant and four years for the sewer network and pumping stations.
Solution
In the sewage sludge composting area, one of the tasks was to protect the half-open halls of the newly constructed composting plant from the effects of the weather. A total of eight mobile doors measuring 28 x 5 metres were to be installed. A particular challenge: regularly occurring wind speeds of up to 160 km/h. In close consultation with the general contractor WTE, Tectura folding fronts made of lightweight yet high-strength PVC/PES material were chosen to cover large façade openings easily and efficiently.
Benefits
Tectura textile doors not only offer the necessary protection from the weather and birds. They are also insensitive to high wind speeds, easy to maintain and, thanks to their lightweight construction, have low structural requirements. Elaborate substructures or pre-installations are not required. They also allow large façade openings to be closed with customised, movable gates.
